Boat’s Shammi seeks cancellation of Pankaj’s candidacy

Shawdesh desk: Awami League nominated candidate from Barishal-4 constituency Shammi Ahmed has made an appeal to the Election Commission (EC) seeking cancellation of the candidacy of Independent candidate Pankaj Debnath.

Khaled Masud, representative of Shammi Ahmed, submitted the appeal to the EC on Saturday. In her appeal, she made an allegation against Pankaj Debnath of hiding his wealth information.

Incumbent MP Pankaj Debnath, who was suspended from all Awami League posts last year, is the heavyweight candidate while his rival faction wants him to be replaced by Shammi Ahmed, international affairs secretary of the ruling party’s central committee.

Earlier on December 3 last, the Returning Officer withheld the scrutiny of their nomination papers due to allegations against each other.

Following the hearing, the Returning Officer cancelled the nomination form of Shammi Ahmed due to her dual citizenship and declared the nomination paper of Pankaj Debnath legal.
